Longwood: Life during COVID-19

Beginning in April 2020, Greenwood Library sought to collect the stories of community experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The submissions posted here were submitted to that community archive and share Longwood’s stories of Covid-19. We asked students, faculty, and staff to share with us their thoughts and feelings in any format they wanted, and we received submissions of various forms, including journals, poems, artwork, video, poems etc. While we collected submissions throughout 2020 and into early 2021, the bulk of submissions represent the early days and months of quarantine from April - May 2020.

  • Foster Dog by Leslie Whiting

    Foster Dog

    Leslie Whiting

Me and my roommate decided to stay in our off campus home during the COVID-19 crisis. During this time we decided to do a good thing and foster a dog because we know they are lonely and we had a lot of time on our hands. We decided to foster a dog because we wanted to give him a chance to be adopted by one of our families or by someone we know. Turns out we fell in love with the dog because he was so sweet, very easy going, and very loving. However, we were only able to keep the dog for about 3 days because he ended up getting adopted by a family back in Lynchburg. We were very sad to see him go but we were very happy they we were able to give him a temporary home before he found a forever home. I am a huge animal lover and I was very happy I got to experience fostering a dog and I think others should do so as well because it was a great experience.

Photo of Wygal room 104. There is a biology class sharing our lecture room and a skeleton hung on its frame in the corner for weeks. The drum kit appeared part way through the semester and the opportunity was not to be missed! Cigarette supplied by a violinist. The "no smoking" sign, a remnant of a distant past, was a happy coincidence.

    Quarantine Art

    Rachel Arrington

As an art education student who relies heavily on the resources that Bedford has to offer, I was heartbroken that I would be not only taken away from my friends at school due to COVID-19, but this building that has become a second home to me. Without the effort and inspiration of my professors, I think I would have had a much different experience coming home and continuing on with my semester as an art education major; however, their hard work and dedication to continue teaching and inspiring has not gone unnoticed, and has helped me to be successful at home. While attending Longwood's classes in person definitely enhance and enrich our learning as were provided with the best technology and mediums to succeed, it's truly the people there that bring about success. My professors are driven, hardworking people who have helped us to grow as artists over this difficult time, and I am inspired by each and everyone one of them. Pictured below is a piece I worked on over quarantine for my sculpture class. I wanted to represent my love for this school in a big way, so I created a 4' x 5' sculpture of Longwood's logo. The materials used are medium sized rocks and mulch.
