Description

"Nudging Toward Inquiry: Strategies for Better Research Projects", Kristin Fontichiaro (author). Audience: All

  • Fact-based research reports don't cut it in the Internet Age. With information everywhere, let's stretch students' thinking in new ways to not only meet but exceed standards. We'll discuss strategies to make research projects more engaging and enriching, using the Stripling Inquiry Model as a foundation.

"STREAMing: Connecting Reading and Literacy Skills with STEM", Pam Aerni. Audience: Primary

  • Participants will engage in problem-solving using literacy/reading skills with children’s literature and STEM. Research shows that students make deeper connections within and between content areas when literacy skills are integrated into learning experiences. The participants will leave the session with materials and resources to implement five STREAM units.

"Children's Books and Technology: Comedy, Controversy, and Social Commentary", Lynne Farrell Stover (author). Audience: Primary, Intermediate, Jr. High/Middle

  • Today’s young students have never known a world without computers, electronic books, and Smartphones. This situation has not escaped the authors of some lighthearted but “edgy” children’s books. Featuring the titles Goodnight iPad, It’s a Book, and The Phantom of the Post Office, this interactive session includes classroom-ready lessons and door prizes.

"Top Ten Reading Promotion Programs", Michelle Kalosik & Claire Bremner. Audience: Primary, Intermediate

  • From story-telling pigs to baseball games, this session will give you great ways to promote reading through cost-effective and easy-to-manage programs. Join us as we share ways that will help inspire and motivate young readers. Participants will receive detailed information on how to implement unforgettable programs that your entire school will enjoy.

"Collaboration, Citation, Technology! OH MY!, Laurie Bolt & Meagan Waff. Audience: Intermediate, Jr. High/Middle High

  • Use collaboration to complete media projects with language arts classes. With increased class sizes, the demand on educators is great. In an effort to increase collaboration, decrease exhaustion, and provide opportunities that include research, citation and technology, we developed several projects in which students worked independently and in small groups with great success.

"Balanced Literacy for All Students", Tami Slater & Lindsay Ambler. Audience: Primary, Intermediate

  • Balanced literacy is an organizational framework which allows teachers to cultivate the skills and strategies of reading, writing, thinking, speaking, and listening for all students. Participates will delve into the components of balanced literacy and see it in action in an elementary classroom.
