Alpha Sigma Tau Scrapbook 1947-48

Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority was founded in 1899 at Michigan State Normal School (now Eastern Michigan University). The Zeta Tau Chapter at Longwood University was chartered in 1935 at [then] State Teachers College.
The Alpha Sigma Tau Collection consists of a scrapbook that contains photographs of sorority members and hand-drawn illustrations ranging in date from 1947-1950.

Beorc Eh Thorn Scrapbook 1936-1949

Beorc Eh Thorn was a local honorary English society formed at [then] State Teachers College in 1935. The society was organized, according to their constitution, for the purpose of “promot[ing] among the membership the enjoyment and appreciation of literature, the cultivation of creative writing, the use of proper English, and the recognition of outstanding achievement in the field of English study.” Beorc Eh Thorn also conducted monthly programs, based on an annual theme, that brought well-known authors, playwrights, poets, and scholars to the campus to speak to the student body. It was through the work of Beorc Eh Thorn, and early faculty sponsor Dr. James Grainger, that writers such as Ellen Glasgow, Vladimir Nabokov, Robert Frost, and Carl Sandburg were brought to Farmville to speak.
This scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings, ephemera, photographs, and correspondence with, and regarding, writers the society brought to speak in Farmville.

Cora Helen Meeks Anthony Scrapbook

Cora Helen Meeks was born in 1905 in Farmville, Virginia. From 1922 to 1926 she attended [then] State Teachers College, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in English. While at the school Meeks was a member of the Choral Club, the Guitar and Mandolin Club, the Prince Edward Club, the Athletic Association, and the YWCA. After graduation, she taught for many years at Hopewell High School.
This scrapbook, which dates from 1926 to 1967, contains photographs, newspaper clippings, and ephemera related to the State Teachers College class of 1926. While some of the items in the scrapbook date to the years when the members were in attendance, the majority of the materials date from later years, including important milestones in member’s lives and major reunion years for the class of 1926.

Eva Lucile Palmer was born in 1904 in Richmond, Virginia. She attended [then] State Female Normal School/State Teachers College from 1921-1924. During her time at the school she was involved in the Traveler's Club and the Athenian Literary Society. After graduation, Palmer became a teacher in the Richmond public schools.
This scrapbook dates from 1921-1924 and includes photographs, ephemera, and notes from Eva Lucile Palmer's time at the State Teachers College.

M. Kate Childress was born in 1866 in Jetersville, Virginia. She was a member of the first class of students to attend State Female Normal School when it opened in 1884.
This autograph book dates from 1884 to 1889 and contains signatures and quotes from many of Kate Childress' classmates and teachers.

Katherine Hamilton Krebs was born in 1899 in Rockbridge, Virginia to Alexander McNutt and Eva Hamilton Krebs. In 1918, she enrolled in the State Normal School for Women in Farmville, Virginia, earning her diploma in 1920. While a student at State Normal School for Women, Krebs was a member of YWCA, Sigma Sigma Sigma (ΣΣΣ), Mu Omega (ΜΩ), Ellen Richards Club, D.I.R.K., the Cunningham Literary Society, the Roanoke Club, the Cotillion Club, and the Athletic Association. Additionally, she played on the Junior and Senior basketball teams, serving as Captain of the former.

Lottie West Scrapbook

Lottie Belle West of Bacon’s Castle, Virginia was born in 1901. From 1918 to 1919 she attended [then] State Female Normal School and later taught school in Richmond, Virginia. She later returned to, by then, State Teachers College and earned her bachelor’s degree in 1936.
The scrapbook in this collection, which dates from 1918 to 1919, contains handwritten notes, ephemera, photographs, and other memorabilia from Lottie West’s initial period of time at the school.

Louise Doyle Scrapbook

Louise Doyle was born in McKenney, Virginia in 1901. She attended [then] State Normal School for Women from 1920 to 1921. While at the school she served as President of the Dinwiddie Club and on both the Music and Membership Committees of the YWCA. Additionally she was a member of the Glee Club, the Athletic Association, the Cunningham Literary Society, D.I.R.K., and the Rural Club. After graduation she taught for several years in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. In 1927 she married Clarence W. Rigdon who unfortunately died just one year later. Louise Doyle Rigdon returned to [by then] State Teachers College to earn her bachelor’s degree and graduated in 1939. For many years, Louise Doyle Rigdon served as the President of the Hopewell Chapter of the Alumnae Association.
The Scrapbook dates from 1920-1921 and includes ephemera and photographs.

Martha Jane Bill Scrapbook

Martha Jane Bill was born in Roanoke, Virginia in 1892. She graduated from [then] State Female Normal School in 1914. While at the school Martha Bill was a member of the Pierian Literary Society, the track team, the Southwest Virginia Club, the Roanoke Club, the German Club, the Jefferson Debating Club, and the Ellen H. Richards Club. Additionally, she served as the 1914 Senior Class Treasurer.
After graduation, Martha Bill worked for many years in the public schools in Roanoke County and from 1950 to 1965 was the Postmaster in the Pulaski, Virginia Post Office.
This scrapbook, originally organized by Martha Jane Bill, dates from 1912 – 1914, and includes photographs and handwritten notes. The majority of the photographs are of S.F.N.S. students and faculty taken in City Point, Virginia and in Farmville and surrounding areas. Other photographs are of soldiers at [then] Camp Lee in Hopewell, Virginia.

Additionally, she served as Exchange Editor of The Focus (literary magazine), and President of both the Pierian Literary Society and the Lynchburg Club.
This collection, which dates from 1909 to 1915, consists of two scrapbooks compiled by Mary Catherine Rumbough while a student at Lynchburg High School and then at the State Female Normal School.
