Abstract
"Not long ago a large Middle Western high school made a survey of its graduates over a ten-year period. Among the questions asked was, ' What, that you have found essential to your success, did your high school fail to provide?" Over ninety per cent of the alumni, most of whom had entered business and the professions, answered, 'High School did not provide adequate training in speaking.' " In the state of Virginia great strides have been made in recent years regarding the development of speech classes and speech program. Now on the threshold of "Where do we go from here?", it is necessary first to determine the status quo of speech classes and speech programs in the public high schools.
