Description
Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia, celebrated its 150th anniversary during the 1988-1989 academic year. The College was founded on March 5, 1839, when the Farmville Female Seminary Association was incorporated by the General Assembly of Virginia. The Seminary was expanded into Farmville Female College in 1860. It changed from private to public status on April 7, 1884, when the state of Virginia acquired the property and turned it into the first state institution of higher learning for women in Virginia. The College went through a series of name changes: the State Female Normal School at Farmville; the State Teachers College at Farmville; and, finally, in 1949, Longwood College. Longwood became fully coeducational in 1976. (description from dust jacket of book)
