Proposal Title
Mindful Literacy
Topic
reading
Description
In the ever-changing classroom, educators are charged to create engaged readers. We address background knowledge, teach reading strategies, give the kids bookmarks, put posters on our wall, yet often these best practices aren’t enough. We may get kids reading, but have we created thoughtful readers, life-long readers? So then, what? What if we need to step away from the page, and facilitate thinkers? Thinkers will become engaged readers; beyond that, engaged readers are likely to become writers too! Fostering abstract, high-level thinking is essential for achieving this goal. This session shares instructional practice you can implement in your classroom from day one of the new school year. We will go beyond the page to explore engaged literacy instruction that provides differentiated access for all learners.
