Longwood has been governed by several different boards since its founding as a state institution in 1884. From 1884-1914 the school was managed by a Board of Trustees. The school was then governed by the Virginia Normal School Board, from 1915-1923, and then briefly by the Board of Virginia Teachers Colleges from 1924-1929. from 1924-1929 the Board of Virginia Teachers Colleges. From 1930-1963 the school was governed by the State Board of Education, full minutes for that board can be found at the Library of Virginia. Finally in 1964 Longwood has been governed by a Board of Visitors, composed of thirteen members appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the General Assembly.
