Abstract

The American media, through movies and books, often perpetuates a romanticized image of the soldier. Each solder, endowed with exceptional fortitude, selflessness, and resilience, willingly makes sacrifices for others despite tremendous – and sometimes unbelievable— obstacles. Other times, soldiers are vilified as belonging to a corrupt institution with a secretive agenda. The works of Deanna Schwartz and Daniel Corrie, the authors of I Couldn't Save My Boy and Book of Years, find a middle ground among these typical representations of soldiers, as they show soldiers both exhibiting great courage while dealing with hardships, yet showing vulnerability as they care for their families.
