Description

Every individual is taught the importance of hand hygiene and how to properly wash hands in NURS 220: Clinical Skills for Nursing. While completing clinicals this semester, we have observed people using alcohol-based hand sanitizer products instead of washing their hands with soap and water. Arguably, it is done for convenience; however, is there a different level of effectiveness between the two? Does sanitizing the hands with alcohol-based sanitizer products kill more pathogens than the traditional method of washing with soap and water? Are there moments when one method is preferred over the other?
