classroom instruction

Description

Mastering vocabulary is challenging for second language learners, students with disabilities, and students who are at risk. Given the vast number of words students must master prior to graduation (over 100,000), it is impossible for teachers and specialists to teach students all the words they need to know. Hart and Risley’s landmark study of the language of children from diverse families informs us that all school personnel need to focus on vocabulary. The Virginia Department of Education’s analysis of students performance on the Standards of Learning indicates that weaknesses in vocabulary knowledge adversely effect student’s performance in the general curriculum and, as a result, state assessments. This session will review the vocabulary expectations of the education standards and present a variety of evidence-based approaches for vocabulary mastery that are readily implemented in the classroom for vocabulary mastery. Participants will be engaged in activities from analysis of education standards to implementation of strategies.
