Concurrent Session IV

Description

"Information Please!", Nancy Zirkle & Debbi Bowen (repeat from session III). Audience: Primary, Intermediate

  • What do snakes and stars and sunken treasures have in common? Why, they are all wonderful topics for informational texts! Come along as we explore research-based activities for teaching students in grades K-6 how to read and think critically about informational texts. Strategies for all teachers, librarians, reading specialists, etc.

"It Doesn't Always Have to Rhyme: Using Poetry across the Curriculum", Margaret Scott and Anna Ford (Repeat from Session III). Audience: Primary, Intermediate

  • Presenters will share cross-curricular poetry activities based on poetry mentor texts and fiction and nonfiction read-alouds. Participants will be engaged by writing poems using mentor texts and poetry frames and by examining professional and children’s poetry books and student work samples.

"Comix: The Graphic Organizer", Bentley Boyd (author). Audience: All

  • Presenters will share cross-curricular poetry activities based on poetry mentor texts and fiction and nonfiction read-alouds. Participants will be engaged by writing poems using mentor texts and poetry frames and by examining professional and children’s poetry books and student work samples.

"Hooking Even Reluctant Readers: Books that Educate while They Entertain", Linda Salisbury (author). Audience: Intermediate, Jr. High/Middle

  • Students are hooked on Bailey Fish Adventure series with realistic, engaging fictional characters and family situations (single parents, adoption, foster care, homelessness) while caught up in adventures and mysteries often involving American history. Session deals with using hands-on materials (molas, shells, rubber chickens) to add to fun and educational experience. Writing skills reinforced. Door prizes.

"Masculinity in Multi-cultural Young Adult Literature", Rhonda Brock-Servais & Jonathan Page. Audience: Middle/Jr. High, High School

  • We plan to examine cross-cultural texts (African American, Native American, Hispanic, and Asian American) to reveal how constructions of masculinity affect agency and voice, received notions of masculinity, authentic constructions of masculinity and the influence of culture on masculinity. Further, this can be used to sharpen students’ critical interpretations skills and foster and greater appreciation of young adult literature.

"Retelling Through Rhythm", Ronda Scarrow. Audience: Intermediate, Jr. High/Middle, High School

  • Using multiple senses and collaboration in your classroom can bring life to literacy for your students. Step out of your comfort zone and be a part of a hands-on workshop offering creative ideas to increase engagement, comprehension, and teamwork. We will collectively explore ways to retell stories through rhythm.
